Reading battle back for win

Garath McCleary marked his return from injury in style by coming off the bench to fire Reading to a 2-1 comeback win over League Two Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

McCleary, making his first appearance after recovering from a calf problem, grabbed the winner six minutes from time.

The Jamaica international tapped home at the back post after Hal Robson-Kanu and Stephen Quinn had combined neatly down the left.

Pompey dumped out Derby in the first round and looked on course to claim another Championship scalp when teenager Conor Chaplin opened the scoring five minutes before half-time.

Reading goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi made a mess of his attempted clearance, allowing Chaplin to fire into an empty net from an acute angle.

Nick Blackman drew Reading level in the 64th minute with a superb solo strike.

Former Sheffield United star Blackman cut in from the right before burying a left-foot shot beyond Pompey goalkeeper Paul Jones from mid-way inside the penalty area and make it 1-1.

McCleary then sealed the victory late on to inflict Pompey's first defeat under new manager Paul Cook.
