Champions Northampton finish season on a high by beating 10-man Portsmouth

James Collins netted a late clincher to give Northampton the perfect finale for a league winning season as they beat 10-man Portsmouth 2-1 at Fratton Park.

The League Two champions took the lead in the 14th minute when defender Jack Whatmough diverted Nicky Adams' centre into his own goal.

Pompey had pegged them back when Kal Naismith scored with a left-footed stunner, a thunderous swirled effort from 35 yards.

But Collins sent the 2,807 travelling fans home even happier when he tapped in left-back David Buchanan's low cross.

Pompey midfielder Kieron Freeman saw a straight red, which will see him miss the play-offs, for a reckless two-footed lunge on John-Joe O'Toole, which despite not touching the player was out of control.

The home side earlier should have scored as Naismith somehow failed to beat Adam Smith with three efforts in a scramble after Ben Davies' low cross.

The former Accrington man attempted to try the long-range trick which brought his goal but Smith was equal to it.

With Plymouth winning, Pompey will play their home play-off game with Argyle on Thursday before heading down the coast next Sunday.
