Redemption for Wallace

Jed Wallace spared his own blushes with a late winner in Portsmouth's 1-0 victory over Exeter, having earlier blazed a second-half penalty kick over the crossbar.

Wallace scored a fine solo goal in the last minute of normal time to give Pompey a win which lifted the club clear of the immediate relegation zone.

His well-taken goal - a 13th of the season for the midfielder - atoned for a 73rd-minute blunder when Pompey's man-of-the-match blazed a penalty high over the Fratton End bar after Grecians defender Christian Ribeiro had tripped Matt Tubbs.

Pompey, who celebrated a second consecutive home win, spurned several earlier chances to have won a match which only came to life in the second half.

Wallace brought a superb save out of Christy Pym, just before James Dunne rattled the Grecians crossbar with a ferocious shot from 35 yards.

Apart from when Arron Davies clipped the bar, little was seen of Exeter in the second period.

They had a good chance in a tepid first half when Jordan Moore-Taylor brought a panicked clearance from Paul Robinson while, at the other end, Josh Passley grazed the Exeter woodwork.

Wallace made sure they went home empty handed to lift Pompey seven points clear of danger.
