Pompey set sights on Defoe

Portsmouth have reportedly had an ambitious offer for striker Jermain Defoe accepted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Defoe has been strongly linked with a move away from the north London club during the past two transfer windows after seeing his starting opportunities at White Hart Lane become limited.

The 25-year is currently well behind Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov in coach Juande Ramos' pecking order.

Pompey's ability to land the former West Ham hitman could also have a major bearing on the future of Benjani Mwaruwari.

The Zimbabwe striker is believed to be interesting Manchester City and could be allowed to leave Fratton Park before the transfer window closes at midnight.

Speaking earlier this month, Defoe suggested his Tottenham days might be numbered following a discussion with Ramos.

The England striker has just 18 months remaining on his current contract but was keen to stay at White Hart Lane.

He revealed: "The manager has said I can leave if I want, but I want to prove him wrong. I want to stay here.

"He called me into his office and told me. At first I thought it was a joke.

"I would love to sign a new contract and I know people at the top of the club want me to stay.

"But no-one can expect me to sign a new deal if I can't get a game."
