Pompey sent to Stevenage in cup

The draw for the Carling Cup first round was made on Wednesday, with Portsmouth's clash at Stevenage among the stand-out ties. Recently-relegated Pompey must travel to Broadhall Way to take on League Two newcomers Boro. The other clubs relegated from the Premier League last season - Burnley and Hull City - both received a bye into the second round. The draw was regionalised and the ties will be played in the week commencing August 9. Other notable games see Southampton host fellow South Coast side Bournemouth, while Preston travel to local rivals Stockport and Leeds host Lincoln. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough travel to League Two side Chesterfield's new B2net Stadium, Nottingham Forest face a trip to Bradford and Oxford United host Bristol Rovers. Manchester United won the competition last season, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the Wembley final.
