Pompey's Sol setback
02 May 2007 - 13:25:34
Portsmouth's hopes of clinching a place in next season's UEFA Cup have been rocked by the news that influential defender Sol Campbell will miss the last two games of the Premiership campaign.
A scan has shown that the 32-year-old former Arsenal and Tottenham stalwart has a torn Achilles tendon which could require surgery in the summer.
"Sol is struggling with his Achilles. He's got a little bit of a tear in there and it looks like he's out for the season," confirmed Pompey boss Harry Redknapp.
"He's had a scan, and now it's a case of whether he needs an operation or not. What we don't want is for him to rest it through the summer only for it to go at the start of next season.
"We coped without Sol in the wins over Manchester United and Liverpool. But losing him now is a big blow."
Midfielders Matt Taylor, Richard Hughes and defender Dejan Stefanovic are also doubts for Saturday's visit to Everton.
Campbell will miss that game and the final match of the season against former club Arsenal.
