Pompey primed for Spurs semi
07 Mar 2010 - 18:21:04
Ex-Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp could face his former club in the semi-finals of the FA Cup if his Tottenham side can overcome Fulham in a sixth-round replay later this month.
Redknapp guided Pompey to victory in the 2008 FA Cup Final against Cardiff City only to walk out on the club later in the year to take up the Spurs job, since when it was been unremitting gloom for the south coast club.
Redknapp's overspending at Fratton Park has been blamed in some quarters for Pompey's current financial problems although that has not stopped Avram Grant guiding them to the last four of the FA Cup.
Portsmouth beat local rivals Southampton in the fifth round before emerging victorious from Saturday's quarter-final clash against Birmingham City.
Spurs held Fulham to a goalless draw at Craven Cottage and will be favourites to claim glory in the replay in just over two weeks' time.
In the other semi-final, last year's winners Chelsea face Aston Villa after easing to a straightforward 2-0 victory against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Martin O'Neill's team had a far tougher sixth-round encounter, being forced to come from two goals down to beat Championship side Reading 4-2.
The Royals have been this season's giant-killers having beaten Liverpool, Reading and West Brom earlier in the competition.
The two games will be played at Wembley over the weekend of 10 and 11 April.
