Portsmouth have confirmed that they are interested in signing Real Madrid's Argentina international striker Javier Saviola.
The 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu since joining Real from deadly rivals Barcelona in the summer of 2007, scoring four goals in 22 appearances.
Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie admitted: "I've been working on a couple of targets and he has been looked at. I have had quite a lot of discussions with Real.
"I'm sure there's a deal to be done, but it will be down to (manager) Tony Adams to decide if he wants to take that forward."
Saviola himself has hinted that he would prefer to stay put, telling the Spanish media: "I want to stay with Real and fight for an opportunity.
"I will only consider leaving if I receive an offer of a big project."
