Pompey make Sol complaint

Portsmouth have decided to make an official complaint to the Football Association concerning the verbal abuse Sol Campbell suffered in Sunday's Premier League victory against Tottenham.

Hampshire Police had earlier in the week asked the FA to intervene because of 'the sheer number of people involved' in the chanting directed at the former Spurs player.

A statement on Pompey's official website read: "After discussions with Sol Campbell, Portsmouth Football Club will be making an official complaint to the Football Association.

"Both Sol and the club feel no player should be subjected to personal abuse of this nature and that it has no place in football.

"The club will be urging the FA to look into this as a matter of urgency and will co-operate fully in any investigations that take place either by the FA or by Hampshire Police who are also conducting their own investigation."

Pompey manager Harry Redknapp had been shocked at the vitriol Campbell was subjected to, saying: "Nobody likes being called filthy names and hearing other filthy abuse.

"It's not right. What's that got to do with coming to a game? For a start there are kids there."
