Pompey Complete Henderson Signing

23-year-old goalkeeper joins from Bristol City. Portsmouth have signed goalkeeper Stephen Henderson on a free transfer from Bristol City, with the news to be made official tomorrow. Henderson arrives at Fratton Park after a successful loan spell at Yeovil Town last season where he was highly regarded by their fans. However, with first-team opportunities at Ashton Gate limited with David James and Dean Gerken also at City, the 23-year-old has made the decision to come to Pompey. Pompey will have to pay The Robins compensation as the player is under 24-years-old but it might be a small price to pay should he provide strong competition for Jamie Ashdown. If he was unwilling to sit on the bench at Bristol City you can imagine that he wouldn't have signed for us to do the same thing. If he is that highly rated then there's a good chance that Steve Cotterill may well be thinking that Henderson will go on to replace Ashdown as Pompey's number one goalkeeper. Hopefully we'll have the chance to see him in action and judge for ourselves whether he is good enough to replace Ashdown and that he won't become someone like Flahavan or Niemi who never made a single appearance in a Portsmouth shirt. With Henderson's signing all-but-complete, it is expected that Luke Varney will also complete a £750,000 move from Derby County and will also officialy be unveiled as a new Portsmouth player. It's also worth noting that Cotterill views Tal Ben-Haim as a selectable player next season. Whilst his presence doesn't represent value for money and his popularity with the fans couldn't be much lower, he would still be a good player at Championship level and should do a decent job at left back. Slowly but surely, the rebuilding job gathers speed...
