Pompey clinch James deal
12 Aug 2006 - 10:57:33
Portsmouth have completed the signing of England goalkeeper David James from Manchester City on a two-year contract for a fee of just over £1million.
The 36-year-old had asked to leave the Citizens earlier this week, with Pompey moving in quickly to tie up a deal.
James had been with City since the beginning of 2004, having previously enjoyed stints with West Ham, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Watford, as well as winning 34 caps for his country.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp said: "He's in great condition. When you look around for goalkeepers, where do you find young goalies?
"David James is still a great athlete and very, very fit and he'll bring us great experience."
James' arrival at Fratton Park follows hot on the heels of the signing of fellow England international Sol Campbell, the centre-back having joined Portsmouth after deciding to leave Arsenal.
