Pompey v Sunderland live!

18 May 2009 19:18
90 + 4 ALL OVER: Sunderland fail to confirm their Premier League status for next season as they throw away the lead to lose 3-1 at Portsmouth, but the match was overshadowed by controversy surrounding referee Wiley.[LNB]90 + 2 Portsmouth are in showboating mode as the clock ticks down.[LNB]90 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time. Primus gets his run-out as he replaces Crouch to a massive cheer.[LNB] That is curtains for Sunderland. Traore shows excellent composure as Portsmouth break to take his time in the box and fire low into the bottom right-hand corner when offered space. Pompey have been excellent in the second half.[LNB]88 GOAL TRAORE (3-1)!!![LNB] Terrible waste from Jones. Edwards puts a cross to the far post and Begovic saves.[LNB]85 Sbragia looks to save the game as Daryl Murphy comes on for Grant Leadbitter. Davenport sees a volley deflect for a corner. Cisse flashes a volley just past the far post.[LNB]82 Sunderland look like they may have run out of ideas. But they have another chance to hit the ball into the box as Ferdinand floats in a free-kick. But Pompey easily clear.[LNB]80 Cisse enters the fray as Teemu Tainio makes way.[LNB]79 Well held by Begovic. Jones meets a left-wing cross to volley at goal from eight yards. But Portsmouth's goalkeeper is up to the task.[LNB]77 Jones is brought down and Sunderland play the free-kick short as Bardsley unleashes a swerving effort which drifts just wide. Cisse is close to coming on.[LNB]75 Sbragia's side are finding their feet. But after regaining the lead, Portsmouth look happy to sit back and allow the fresh legs of Traore to do the attacking.[LNB]73 Sunderland win a corner as Edwards sneaks in on the left-hand side. However, Pompey clear their lines. The game has died down after a frantic few minutes. The Black Cats are correctly still aggrieved by Wiley's role in the first goal.[LNB]72 Sunderland have thrown away the lead, but have not given up as Leadbitter tests Begovic from range.[LNB] After Begovic gathered Richardson's free-kick, he lumps a long-ball down field. Ferdinand produces a dreadful Gaffe when allowing the ball to bounce and Utaka rounds Fulop for the unfortunate Bardsley to slide in and put the ball into his own goal when attempting to clear. Terrible from Ferdinand.[LNB]68 OWN GOAL BARDSLEY (2-1)!!![LNB]68 Richardson hits the free-kick low and into the wall to take the pace off the ball and Begovic gathers.[LNB]67 Sunderland have a chance to respond as Jones is brought down 30 yards from goal in a central position.[LNB]65 There is contention on the South Coast as replays suggest referee Wiley blew his whistle before Utaka fired in after wrestling with Davenport. But the official allowed play continue! Mass confusion![LNB] Sunderland's lead lasts all of 90 seconds. Portsmouth get the goal their second-half performance deserves as Utaka latches onto a deflection off Leadbitter to blast past Fulop from close range. The Fratton Park striker is booked for removing his shirt when celebrating.[LNB]60 GOAL UTAKA (1-1)!!![LNB] Portsmouth are hit with a ruthless sucker punch. Davenport robs Crouch and charges down the right wing before delivering a stunning cross to the back post where all Jones has to do is get a toe to the ball to spark cart-wheeling celebrations. Are Sunderland staying up?[LNB]59 GOAL JONES (0-1)!!!Line>[LNB]57 Referee Wiley spots some pushing from Crouch at the corner and gives Sunderland a chance to breathe with a free-kick.[LNB]56 Sunderland are defending for their lives at the moment as a Traore effort deflects off Collins to top-spin over the bar for another corner. Sunderland half-clear only for Johnson the charge to the byline to notch up a fifth corner of the second half.[LNB]54 Really bad news for Sunderland as Malbranque limps off and Sbragia is forced to send on Carlos Edwards.[LNB]53 Utaka does well down the right and wins another free-kick. Fulop grabs Davis's crossed kick with Crouch looking dangerous. Sunderland are under pressure.[LNB]51 Johnson strikes the free-kick low and it is deflected for a corner. Davis delivers and Sunderland scramble the ball behind. Crouch meets the second corner and the Black Cats just survive.[LNB]50 Sunderland make their first venture forward of the half as Malbranque attempts to win a corner, but Hreidarsson is too wise for that and Pompey move forward to win a free-kick 25 yards from goal.[LNB]49 Davis plays the corner short to Johnson and Sunderland are out quickly to clear.[LNB]48 The changes have had an impact on Pompey, who start very well and win a corner.[LNB]46 WE'RE BACK: Richard Hughes, who was feeling unwell before the game, makes way for Armand Traore. Younes Kaboul replaces Kanu.[LNB] John Mullins: "Kick it into Jones, support the big man and get us a goal! 1-0 Richardson!"[LNB] The betting odds have changed: Portsmouth 9/5, draw 6/5 and Sunderland 5/2.[LNB]45 + 1 HALF-TIME: The first half ends with the score at 0-0. This was never going to be a pretty encounter but we could have had a goal at both ends. Crouch and Jones have both hit posts with headers with torturous bad luck. The point is far from ideal for Sunderland. Will they be able to find a winner? What have you made of the first half? Should there be substitutions? Let me have your thoughts at peter.fraser@bskyb.com.[LNB]45 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of one minute added time.[LNB]45 Distin bravely heads away with Davenport lurking. The players' heads collide but, after a bit of treatment, they appear okay.[LNB]44 That chance appears to have sparked a bit more intent in Sunderland as Jones earns a corner off Johnson.[LNB]42 Jones hits the post in almost identical fashion to Crouch! Malbranque, so often the creator for Sunderland, dinks a cross into the danger area and Jones nods on to hit the far post and the ball rolls agonisingly across the line. If a Sunderland midfielder had taken a chance and followed up, they would have had a simple tap-in.[LNB]39 Campbell chips a long ball to Kanu, who chests into the path of Utaka. However, the Portsmouth forward is not on his toes and Sunderland step in to hoof clear. *Ugh*.[LNB]37 Pompey win a free-kick in their own half as Davis is felled. Neither side appears capable of keeping the ball for a prolonged spell in what has been a very scrappy last 10 minutes.[LNB]35 After a lively start, this match is limping toward half-time. It is not difficult to see why either side has struggled this term. I fancy one goal to win it, if you are considering a wager at the interval.[LNB]34 Perhaps I did Jones a disservice as he back-heels into the path of Richardson, but the former Manchester United player, under pressure from Campbell it has to be said, hits over the bar. Sunderland want a corner, but it is a goal-kick.[LNB]32 Jones appears to have the strength and pace to get the better of Campbell, which not many do, but his passing has been dreadful as he roles to the edge of the area only to find the defending Davis.[LNB]30 Campbell gives the ball straight to Richardson but the Sunderland man's right-footed throughball to Jones is well cut-out by Johnson.[LNB]29 Kanu does well to feed Utaka down the right, but the forward wastes the opportunity and puts his effort straight at Danny Collins.[LNB]26 Johnson tries his luck from range. The full-back has demonstrated he has an eye for the spectacular during the season. Tainio, though, charges down.[LNB]25 Pompey look to build an attack of their own, but Kanu gets the ball stuck under his sizeable feet and Sunderland are back in numbers to regain possession.[LNB]23 I could have spoken too soon as Bardsley, who is playing in an advanced role, has two chances to cross. However, both opportunities - one low, one high - are wasted and cleared.[LNB]22 Ferdinand is back on the field after being patch up. Pompey appear to have survived Sunderland's early pressure.[LNB]20 Hart wants a penalty when Crouch and Anton Ferdinand collide in the air. There is nothing in it and referee Wiley is not interested. Ferdinand has picked up a cut eyebrow as a result of the crash of heads.[LNB]18 Pompey's Hermann Hreidarsson feints a long-throw only for his side to opt for a passing build-up. Johnson's punt into the box dribbles out for a goal-kick.[LNB]17 Sunderland's strong travelling support bellow out a rendition of, 'Cheer up Alan Shearer'.[LNB]16 Pompey break, but Utaka panics at the back-post when retrieving a cross and hits his effort hopelessly wide.[LNB]14 Comedy capers at the back from Portsmouth as Jones turns Sol Campbell with ease. Begovic then denies Jones, Richardson and Malbranque. The latter's effort is the best chance of the match, but is weak.[LNB]13 Pompey enjoy a nice passage of passing in their midfield, but their opponents eventually force a loose ball out for a throw-in.[LNB]12 Leadbitter's corner is poor and, under no pressure, Crouch can comfortably head away from the edge of the six-yard box.[LNB]11 Kanu has dropped deeper, but the Pompey forward cannot prevent Sunderland winning a corner. Grant Leadbitter is to deliver.[LNB]9 Early stages, but Pompey and their three-man attack are being over run in midfield. Sean Davis is wasteful in possession and Sunderland break only for Malbranque to volley just wide.[LNB]7 When a cross was probably the better option, Richardson optimistically looks to whip one into the near post. He only succeeds in finding the stands. A waste.[LNB]7 A chance for Sunderland as they win a free-kick 35 yards from goal.[LNB]6 That miss is bad news for Marc Barry, who has 'Crouchie' in his Fantasy Football team.[LNB]5 Johnson breaks down the right and finds Crouch, whose height has Sunderland panicking. The England international sees and initial header saved before his second effort hits the post and rolls across the face of goal. How did that not go in?!?[LNB]3 Sunderland are forcing the issue in the opening stages, but Jones has yet to get involved as the Black Cats look to the highly influential Steed Malbranque for creativity.[LNB]1 It is the visitors who go on the first attack as Phil Bardsley swings a cross into the penalty area, but debutant Begovic gathers.[LNB]KICK-OFF: Sunderland get the game at an always atmospheric Fratton Park.[LNB] Danny Spall is pleased to see Pompey boss Paul Hart going with a three-man attack. He also hopes Fratton Park legend Linvoy Primus gets an outing in the second half.[LNB] Portsmouth and Sunderland are out on the field. The recent rain that has swept the country is nowhere to be seen at the moment.[LNB] The teams are gathered in the tight Fratton Park tunnel. Let's hope for a good game.[LNB] Gavin Dinsdale in Rio de Janeiro is desperate for his beloved Sunderland to pick up the three points. He wants Djibril Cisse in the first-team and believes the Black Cats have struggled due to a lack of solid midfield and attacking options.[LNB] Ian Marshall boldly predicts a 3-1 win for Sunderland with Kieran Richardson and Kenwyne Jones among the goals. However, Mr Marshall shows his ruthless side by laughing at my sunburn. I think I have some sun-sensitive, celtic genes somewhere, but this is not a time to be discussing my family tree. Ten minutes to go to kick-off.[LNB] Neil Quinn is a Portsmouth fan and he expects his team to ensure Sunderland continue to sweat going into the final game of the season. What do fans of the Black Cats think?[LNB] If you fancy a flutter on events on the South Coast... Portsmouth are 5/4, while a draw and a Sunderland win are both at 9/4. Crouch is favourite to open the scoring at fives.[LNB] What sort of a match do you think we are in for tonight? Who will win? What will be the final score? Portsmouth fans, how pleased are you to be safe? Sunderland supporters, where do you think your team has gone wrong this season to still be battling for survival? What do you make of the team selections? John Utaka's role will be interesting. You can drop me a line on any subject - Aftersun recommendations will be welcome - throughout the match and I will publish a selection of the best. Get in touch at peter.fraser@bskyb.com.[LNB] Sunderland are unchanged while Portsmouth make three changes. Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic replaces David James to make his debut in goal while Utaka and Kanu both return to the starting side to form a three-man forward line alongside Peter Crouch.[LNB] Sunderland's future in the top flight remains far from certain. The Black Cats must win in order to guarantee survival ahead of the weekend's final game of the season against Chelsea. Otherwise, Ricky Sbragia's side could still be caught by arch-rivals Newcastle on goal difference. Meanwhile, Portsmouth are safe as a result of the Magpies' home defeat to Fulham on Saturday.[LNB] I have overcome a nasty bout of sunburn after a day cricket-watching at Chester-le-Street on Sunday in order to watch tonight's match. 'How is that possible when there was a maximum of 30 minutes scorchio sunshine in Durham?' I hear you say. Well, do not underestimate my complete inability to develop a suntan. But enough of all that, there are more important matters to deal with this Monday evening.[LNB]Referee: Alan Wiley[LNB]Sunderland team: Fulop, Bardsley, Davenport, Ferdinand, Collins, Tainio, Malbranque, Whitehead, Leadbitter, Richardson, Jones.
