Pompey still keen on Benjani

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has confirmed that the club will renew their interest in Benjani in the January transfer window. The 31-year-old enjoyed two years on the south coast after signing from Auxerre in January 2006 before moving on to Manchester City for £4million 18-months ago. Although never prolific during his time at Fratton Park, as a record of 19 Premier League goals in 70 appearances shows, he quickly became a firm favourite with the Pompey faithful. The Zimbabwe international looked certain to rejoin his former club on deadline day earlier in the week, after slipping down the pecking order at City, but any move was scuppered over fears for the striker's thigh injury. "We would be very keen to bring Benjani back," Storrie told the Sunday Mirror. Risk "He has this thigh injury and nobody knows exactly what it is. He has broken down on it twice now and they tell me he could be a couple of weeks away. "It would have been a hell of a risk because if the thigh goes again he will be out for three or four months. "Our people are just waiting to see him play and we will revisit the situation again in January."
