Pompey move for Smith

Sky Sports News understands Portsmouth have entered the race for Watford's Tommy Smith. Smith looked set to seal a move to Reading this week after a fee was agreed for his services and the player underwent a medical at the Madejski Stadium. However, Portsmouth are ready to hijack the deal and try to bring the former Sunderland and Derby ace to Fratton Park. Smith has been linked with a move away from Watford all summer and it appears the Hornets are resigned to losing their prized asset. Portsmouth are believed to have agreed a fee of £1.8million with Watford for Smith and have been given permission to hold talks with the player. Pompey boss Paul Hart is keen to bolster his squad after losing their opening three games of the season and seeing a number of top stars leave this summer, and he sees Smith as a quality addition to his ranks.
