Pompey medical for Smith

Sky Sports sources understand Tommy Smith is currently undergoing a medical at Portsmouth. The Watford forward had looked all set to join long-term suitors Reading when Portsmouth came in with a last gasp bid for his services. Having weighed up his options it now looks as though Smith has plumped for Fratton Park over the Madejski Stadium. After a summer of offloading their top stars Portsmouth are desperate for new faces and have moved quickly to hijack Reading's bid for Smith. Royals boss Brendan Rodgers, who managed Smith at Waford, is refusing to admit defeat in his attempt to land a player he rates highly. "Tommy was on his way here to sign and at the very last minute there's been a higher bid from Portsmouth, which Watford have accepted, but Tommy hasn't accepted as of yet," Rodgers told the Reading Post. "I respect Tommy and his decisions and he needs to take stock of things, but it's certainly not dead. "Tommy was really happy with everything here, but it's obviously a Premier League opportunity. "It's the last big move of his career so he has to listen in on that in relation to what is best for him and his family."
