Pompey Humbled By Gibraltar

Pompey suffered a slightly embarrassing but perhaps not unexpected pre-season defeat to Gibraltar.

With so many trialists playing together for the first time on an artificial pitch in a stadium that saw jets take off nearby, it is no surprise that the home side won, no matter how poor you might have believed them to be.

You surely wouldn't have heard of George Cabrera who scored the first goal or Aaron Payas who converted a first half penalty after Julien Lopez took down Lee Casciaro in the box.

Casciaro soon made himself known to the 400 or so travelling Pompey fans by scoring a brace in the second half. It may look bad and the result may have sparked anger amongst some of our fans but we really shouldn't be too concerned.

After all, the youngsters will learn from the defeat and its doubtful that very many of the trialistswill become permanent signings for the club in the near future.

The more worrying news yesterday came from Trevor Birch as he looks to be playing the ultimate game of brinkmanship with his latest announcement.

The "redundancy consultancy" is simply just a plea for the senior players to move on or cost people their jobs. It's a massive guilt trip and it smacks of desperation given the many other times our administrator has declared that Portsmouth FC was on the verge of being liquidated.

It's extremely unfair that the employees of our football club will have to deal with uncertain futures but the players are not just to blame for this whole mess.

And while you can't morally defend the seniors who want to stick around and pick up their salary, on principle you can understand why they are doing it and Pompey fans should at least be sharing their ire at the likes of Peter Storrie and David Lampitt who are even more responsible for the Pompey staff losing their jobs.

With issues on and off the pitch continuing to be a struggle, it's no surprise that people are caring less and less about the whole mess.

Pompey's next friendly is against Brighton in Cadiz on Tuesday. Don't expect any positive news to come from that game either.
