Portsmouth [LNB]remain confident they can persuade Sven Goran Eriksson to take up the challenge of leading them to safety even though the former England manager has been assured his job as Mexico coach is safe.[LNB]Eriksson was widely tipped to be sacked if Mexico lost to the United States in the opening game of the final phase of qualifying for the World Cup next summer. [LNB]But after suffering a 2-0 defeat in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, Mexican Football Federation [FMF] president, Justino Compean, insisted they are not already lining up former coach Javier Aguirre for a return following his sacking by Atletico Madrid.[LNB][LNB] Waiting game: Eriksson has received the dreaded vote of confidence from Mexico[LNB]'We fully stand behind Eriksson because our objective is to reach the World Cup,' said Compean. [LNB]'We will be at the World Cup. There are 30 points at stake and we missed out on the first three.' [LNB]Despite the vote of confidence there is a feeling that the support for Eriksson has more to do with an unwillingness to sack the Swede when Portsmouth are interested considering it would cost the FMF around £2.7million in compensation. [LNB]Conversely, cash-strapped Portsmouth would struggle to pick up the tab and would therefore prefer to reach a compromise agreement with Eriksson's current employers that would suit all parties.[LNB] Pompey target Sven Goran Eriksson staying with Mexico [LNB]Portsmouth on alert after Sven's Mexico crash to defeat in the United States [LNB]Remember me? [LNB]However, he is understood to be undecided as to whether Fratton Park would be the best venue despite the potential of a huge bonus payment if he keeps Portsmouth in the top flight. [LNB]Eriksson was playing his cards close to his chest in the wake of the defeat to the United States. [LNB]He said: 'I still have a running contract and I think that I would be a man without courage if I quit now. I would not be brave enough if I said 'thank you and good-bye'.' [LNB]The onus is now on Portsmouth to seek further discussions with Eriksson's advisors, have already made initial contact, and the FMF. [LNB] [LNB]S.O.S to Sven: David James admits he would relish the opportunity to revive former ties with Eriksson[LNB] But veteran goalkeeper David James is hopeful that Portsmouth's ambition can be matched with decisive action given his eagerness to be reunited with his former international manager at club level. [LNB]James said: 'Having a former England manager as manager of Portsmouth I'm sure is something that the fans would never have envisaged. Somebody of his calibre would be a tremendous acquisition for us.' [LNB]Eriksson's former England assistant, Brian Kidd, has already arrived at Fratton Park to help interim manager Paul Hart. [LNB]And former Portsmouth and England midfielder, Darren Anderton, is convinced the pair are the ideal management team to revive the south coast club's fortunes following the dismissal of Tony Adams. [LNB]He said: ''I think the possibility of Sven and Brian could definitely make an impact. I didn't get to play under Sven for England as much as I would have liked due to a few injuries, but his record speaks for itself.'[LNB] Pompey target Sven Goran Eriksson staying with Mexico [LNB]Portsmouth on alert after Sven's Mexico crash to defeat in the United States [LNB]Remember me?
