One For The Future?
Pompey close in on "talented" youngster.
Michael Appleton is keen on signing 17-year-old striker Dan Thompson from Hampton & Richmond.
The youngster has apparently attracted attention from Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Newcastle but he has impressed when training with Pompey and Andy Awford has been singing his praises.
So, it may be that Portsmouth have another player "for the future" but history suggests that there may well be no future for the boy if he signs for us anyway.
In the recent past, Pompey have attempted to bring in young players from other teams and develop them but have seldom succeeded.
Do you remember Danijel Subotic? You probably don't! He was signed back in January 2008 as "one for the future" but where is he now? He's playing for FCM Targu Mures in the Romanian league.
How about the wonderfully named Berlin Ndebe-Nlome and Franck Songo'o? Impressive in pre-season campaigns but the former is now playing for Thai side Chonburi and the latter isn't playing for anyone after failed spells at lower English league clubs.
Others such as Arnold Mvuemba (Lorient), Collins "one day I'll play for Man united" Mbesuma (Golden Arrows FC) and Alexander Rodic (Tianjin Songijang) have disappeared into obscurity having been touted as talents with a bright future by Pompey in the past.
Therefore, the omens aren't good for Thompson if he does join us but he does have two things going for him that the others didn't. Firstly, he may only be young but playing in England means he'll already understand English football unlike the others who couldn't adjust.
Secondly, he can't be much worse than the current crop of strikers Michael Appleton currently has at his disposal. If he's as good as some people say he is, why not give him a try?
And whilst we're on the subject, why not give Ryan Williams a go, too?
