Nugent seals Pompey switch

Portsmouth have completed the £6million signing of David Nugent after the striker passed a medical at Fratton Park.

The former Preston North End forward will be unveiled as a Pompey player at a 5pm press conference on Wednesday alongside another new signing - believed to be Rennes' Nigeria international striker John Utaka.

Nugent held talks with Pompey boss Harry Redknapp last week and has finally decided to move to the south coast club.

The England international, who scored on his one and only appearance to date during the 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifying victory over Andorra in Barcelona in March, also held talks with Sunderland.

"I think he deserves his chance at the top level and I'm delighted to have him," Redknapp said ahead of completing the deal on Tuesday.

"It shows you how far we have come. We have bought some real good players in and I think David will have a good season for us.

"There are not that many people scoring lots of goals so, if he gets into double figures, we will be delighted.

"The team is in good shape but seeing a few more serious players up front would make me happier and really start a buzz for the new season."

Nugent netted 37 times in 107 appearances for Preston following his arrival from Bury in 2005.
