Nugent rues Cats collapse
30 Jul 2007 - 13:57:52
Portsmouth's £6million summer recruit David Nugent has voiced his surprise at the collapse of a possible move to Sunderland from Preston North End.
The 22-year-old England international saw the Black Cats withdraw their offer for his services, before deciding to head to Fratton Park to link up with Pompey.
He told The News of the World: "It wasn't a case of me snubbing Sunderland. In fact, it was the other way around.
"I asked for time to think about the move and they withdrew the bid.
"It was disappointing because I had taken the time to talk with them and I wanted to speak to my family."
However, Sunderland boss Roy Keane painted a different picture of the circumstances, telling The Journal: "I wasn't impatient with Nugent.
"I waited five weeks. If he thinks that is me being impatient he doesn't know me.
"The deal wasn't sitting right, but only time will tell if he made the right decision."
