Nugent finally over injuries
25 Mar 2008 - 16:30:06
Portsmouth striker David Nugent believes that he will show his true worth in the coming weeks, having struggled with niggling injuries for much of his first season at Fratton Park.
The 22-year-old England international has so far failed to live up to the £6million fee which saw him join Pompey from Preston North End last summer, but Nugent feels that injuries have played a major part in that being so.
He told the Portsmouth News: "I've been playing since the start of the season with an injury.
"I've got it sorted out now and hopefully can start making an impression. It's just been wear and tear of the groin, but it has stopped me doing myself justice for Portsmouth.
"I even had pain at the end of last season's England Under-21s European Championship run, but I thought I could play through it.
"I just took painkillers and hoped for the best, but that proved to be a bad decision. In the end I had to have the operation.
"It's taken a long time to recover, but now I can say it feels fine and I've got the buzz again.
"I just need a few games now and, hopefully I can get involved in some for the first team before the season ends."
Nugent has so far scored three times in 16 appearances for Pompey and recently turned down potential loan moves to both Ipswich Town and Stoke City.
