Muntari calls for cup change
10 Dec 2007 - 13:21:23
Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari has urged African Cup of Nations organisers to consider changing the date of future competitions.
Muntari will be one of several high-profile players leaving Premier League clubs for the biennial event which will be held in his native Ghana next month.
The Pompey midfielder, who scored twice in Saturday's 3-1 win at Aston Villa, will miss at least three league matches and believes the competition should be more accommodating to club sides.
The African Cup of Nations is scheduled to run between January 20-February 10 next year by organisers the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
"I am just praying that in future they change the timetable and move it to the summer so that we can play for our clubs all the time," he told the club's official website.
"That is something I feel will benefit everyone and stop all the problems.
"It is certainly something that is possible and the CAF need to look at it.
"We are playing so well at the moment and all we can do is try to pick up as many points as possible before we have to go off to Africa."
