McGhee's Name In The Frame

Pompey job interests former Reading and Brighton boss.

Mark McGhee has confirmed his interest in becoming the new Pompey manager.

The Scot was at Fratton Park on Saturday on a scouting job for his national side and he told the local news "I'm looking to go back in and Portsmouth certainly is something that really interests me."

SkyBet has picked up on his interest and have priced him at 4/1 to be the new man at the helm.

Initially, I strongly believed that McGhee would be a bad appointment given his last job at Aberdeen where he was sacked following a poor run of results which included a 9-0 defeat to Celtic.

He refused to apologise for that defeat, telling fans to look his track record up on wikipedia. So, that's what I did and what I found was disloyalty in his early years with Reading and Leicester and play-off failures with Wolves Millwall.

He has had some success in his career when he got Brighton promoted from the third tier with what was largely Steve Coppell's team but he soon got them relegated again.

The feather in his cap is taking Motherwell to third in the Scottish Premier League but after that achievement it didn't take him long to ditch them for Aberdeen.

He likes to talk himself up but I don't think a man of his perceived arrogance would be popular when his managerial career hasn't really taken off as many thought it would in the early 90's.

I think there are better candidates for the job but it seems like Billy Davies sadly isn't one of them as he hasn't applied. Neither has Steve McClaren, which is a relief!

Sean O'Driscoll remains the favourite to be the next Portsmouth manager but there will probably be more twists and turns in this saga to come.
