James set for Prem record
29 Mar 2007 - 14:50:28
Portsmouth goalkeeper David James is just one clean sheet away from writing his name in the Premiership record books.
The 36-year-old former England international is currently level with Arsenal stalwart David Seaman on 140 shut-outs since the inception of the Premiership in 1992.
Pompey take on Fulham on Saturday and James' 11th clean sheet of the season would see him stand alone at the top of the all-time goalkeeping record standings.
"It's nice to get level with David Seaman, so I'm the holder of some sort of record already," James told the Portsmouth News.
"Now hopefully I can break the record and push on from that. Hopefully it will happen at Fulham on Saturday.
"It's always great to keep a clean sheet. But there was an irony in the one I kept at Reading to equal the record because before the game I wondered if keepers should get the credit for a clean sheet if they didn't have a save to make.
"And then against Reading I didn't have a save to make."
James arrived at Fratton Park last summer and didn't concede a goal in his first six Premiership appearances.
The veteran keeper has made over 650 career appearances for Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester City.
