James reveals award shock
14 Apr 2008 - 16:23:34
Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has revealed his surprise at being named on the shortlist for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award.
The veteran England number one has been nominated along with runaway favourite Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United, Arsenal duo Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor plus Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres for the annual accolade.
The 37-year-old has taken the plaudits for an excellent season with the south coast side in which he equalled a club record of 22 clean sheets during Saturday's goalless draw with Newcastle.
But after moving into the twilight of his career, James has admitted felt his time had passed in terms of winning major awards.
"I was delighted," he admitted. "I have to say I have always considered the PFA awards as something I've not been too interested in.
"But now I've been nominated, it's the best award anybody can be voted for!
"To be considered alongside the likes of Ronaldo is a tremendous feat and, as much as it is an individual nomination, I genuinely think it is a result of what is happening at Portsmouth Football Club."
