James backs Pompey bid
24 Apr 2007 - 12:17:08
Portsmouth's veteran goalkeeper David James is confident that his side can put the cherry on an excellent season by securing a UEFA Cup spot for next term.
Pompey are currently eighth in the Premiership and are only a point off the all-important seventh spot that would see them make the jump into European action.
James said: "When you join teams, your goals have to be realistic.
"What Portsmouth have done in previous Premiership years, with all due respect, has not been particularly spectacular.
"But we are on the cusp of something super here. I think we can achieve more than being a one-season wonder.
"This season Europe is a possibility without a doubt. We have Everton to play away in two weeks' time and that's going to be our big game. Liverpool and Arsenal at home, we will fancy ourselves regardless.
"Fratton Park has been our saviour this season in general because our performances have been very good. Even when we haven't won we've played well.
"We are happy and, with three games available, there is the possibility of achieving nine points which, if we did that, would mean European football."
