James - Pompey have quality
Portsmouth goalkeeper David James remains confident there is enough quality within the squad to survive in the Premier League.
A 3-2 home defeat by fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers condemned Pompey to a fifth successive loss at the start of the new season.
However, James is not too worried by the latest setback for Paul Hart's side and has spotted green shoots of recovery on the South Coast.
The veteran goalkeeper was happy to see Pompey score twice and believes the influx of new arrivals has given the squad a lift.
Very optimistic
"It sounds silly, but if you are going to lose then at least score goals," said James. "There is nothing worse than losing 1-0 and feeling there is no way you are going to score.
"Bolton's first goal was pretty much straight from a free-kick, their second was a dubious penalty and the third was offside.
"You take the goals out and we would have been the winners!
"At the moment we deserve to be where we are in the table because we haven't got anything out of the games.
"But I think we'll be all right. I've seen enough to suggest the talent and the quality is there. We just have to put it together in the right order and get the results. The sooner we can do that the better, but I am very optimistic.
"Last season we suffered because of the amount of players we had out of contract and the amount of players we had on loan.
"You can always question people's desire, but most of the squad that have come in have got points to prove, one way or another."
Jamie O'Hara was among the players brought to Fratton Park before the close of the transfer window and James expects the on-loan Tottenham midfielder to make a significant contribution.
He added: "Jamie sprayed the ball around well and his delivery on set-plays was superb. That is something that we have lacked for nearly three years.
"There seemed to be a nice flow about the team."
