Fabio Capello is facing a World Cup goalkeeping crisis after returning from a chastening encounter with Brazil.[LNB]The England manager is concerned about a knee problem that has been troubling David James all season, admitting after seeing his side lose 1-0 in Qatar that he will not take the 39-year-old to South Africa next summer if his condition does not improve.[LNB] Final demand: David James will need to prove his fitness if he wants to make Fabio Capello's World Cup squad[LNB]And Ben Foster responded to a difficult night in goal against Brazil by hinting strongly that he might have to leave Manchester United, and so secure regular first-team football, to have a realistic hope of being in shape for the World Cup.[LNB]James chose to have minor surgery during the summer in the knowledge that he needed a shoulder operation which would rule him out for six to 10 weeks.[LNB] Troubled times: Ben Foster (right) is considering leaving Manchester United[LNB]But he aggravated the knee on his return and Capello said James is unable to train for two days after Portsmouth games.[LNB]It was why England chose to leave him at home for the Brazil game in the hope that the rest will serve him well. But James has been playing through the pain in a bid to help his club climb clear of relegation danger and he may have to review that if he does not want to jeopardise his chances of going to South Africa as England's No 1.[LNB]Frustration: Capello watches his side lose to Brazil in Qatar[LNB]'We spoke with David James,' said Capello. 'He needed more time after every game. He can't train for two days after each game, so we preferred that he stayed at home. If he is fit, he will be with us. We can take him. But when we choose the players they have to be fit.'[LNB]Foster, surprisingly selected ahead of Robert Green for Saturday night's friendly, continued to look error-prone against Brazil and he admitted a lack of first-team opportunities at Old Trafford is a concern.[LNB]'I'm third choice for Manchester United at the moment and yet I'm playing for my country,' he said. 'It's a weird one. I can't go saying that I want to leave or anything like that, but I'll see what happens. You never know in football, do you?[LNB]'I'm not playing at United, which makes it a lot more difficult for me. It's difficult at United with Edwin van der Sar. He's one of the best keepers in the world. It's as simple as that. You can't go knocking on the manager's door and say he's not doing his job, because he's doing his job.[LNB]'But not even being on the bench is very, very disheartening. I've not been on the bench lately and you have to keep your head up and keep working hard in training. I wasn't expecting to be picked here, to be honest.'[LNB] MARTIN SAMUEL: Awful truth hits Fabio Capello as England's lack of depth exposed by BrazilNew dad Rooney proves a born leader for England in QatarBrazil 1 England 0: Fabio Capello's second-string out-classed in Qatar Confused Foster ponders United exit in battle to retain England No 1 jerseyEngland captain Rooney admits: 'Brazil were much the better team'Matt Upson states his case to overtake Rio Ferdinand as England's new middle man[LNB] [LNB]  Explore more:People:Fabio Capello, David James, Ben Foster, Edwin Van der Sar, Robert GreenPlaces:Brazil, South Africa, United Kingdom, Qatar
