Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has been playing in pain for 18 months because of a shoulder problem, according to his manager Paul Hart. James, 38, who has been an heroic figure in Pompey's successful fight against relegation, waited until they were safe before finally undergoing corrective surgery on Wednesday after missing his first Barclays Premier League game of the season, the 3-1 win over Sunderland on Monday. He will be out for three months and has elected to miss England's World Cup qualifiers this summer against Kazakhstan and Andorra in order to be fit for pre-season at Fratton Park. "Jamo has put an awful lot at risk," said Hart. "He has been playing with that injury for such a long time. "I would think maybe it's 18 months that it's been there although don't ask me what it is. I don't know the medical terms but it has come to a stage when it had to be fixed or else it could have lead to serious complications. "It's typical of the spirit among the players here and the spirit from the entire club. Jamo has done everything for the fight here but they have all been immense and I have nothing but admiration for everybody."
