James: Fabio keep-ing us on our toes
David James has revealed he 'genuinely doesn't know' where he ranks among the England goalkeepers in Fabio Capello's World Cup squad.[LNB] The Portsmouth veteran has been selected in Capello's provisional 30-man squad for the tournament and is jostling with Robert Green and Joe Hart to be first choice.[LNB]James was part of the squad at the last two World Cups, providing the cover to David Seaman in 2002 before being Paul Robinson's understudy in 2006.[LNB]The 39-year-old admits it is frustrating to be part of the squad and not play in the tournament, and is unsure if he will be in for a similar experience in South Africa next month.[LNB]"It's frustrating to go to a World Cup and not play. And the first time was worse than the second," James told The Sun. [LNB]"In Japan, in 2002, David Seaman was the outstanding number one, but I didn't know where I was in the pecking order for number two. [LNB]"I had number 22 on my shirt which suggested I was third choice, but I had confidence I was ahead of Nigel Martyn and ready to play. [LNB]"Dave injured his back against Brazil and looked like he might have to come off. So Ray Clemence, the goalkeeping coach, peered down the bench, looked me straight in the eye and said, 'Nigel, get warmed up'. I was gutted. [LNB]"The last World Cup in Germany wasn't so bad because it was a bit more defined. Paul Robinson was in goal and I was number two. [LNB]"This time I genuinely don't know where I am. Mr Capello does not give too much away. [LNB]"The way he sets his squad out means it is no longer a case of a first XI with an additional number of players.[LNB]"All I know is that I am totally fit and happy with myself and my form. And I'd like to think that other people are also happy with me."
