Hull set to pip Birmingham and Pompey to Reading's £2.5m Hunt

Stephen Hunt is poised for a return to the Barclays Premier League with a cut-price£2.5million move to Hull City from Reading. The Republic of Ireland midfielder has seen moves to Birmingham and Portsmouth break down. City's Alex McLeish seemed to lose interest in a £4m deal and a proposed swap with Pompey striker David Nugent failed to materialise. But Hull boss Phil Brown sees the 28-year-old as the right type to give his side a boost and hopes to follow with a £1.5m deal for Celta Vigo striker Kamel Ghilas, 25, who saw deals to Portsmouth and Blackburn fall through last month.  Reading are grudgingly prepared to accept a lesser sum as they need to get Hunt's £30,000 a week off the wage bill in their final instalment of parachute payments. It will also help them raise their offer for Watford striker Tommy Smith, for whom Sheffield United had a £1.2m bid accepted. Smith turned the move down, waiting for Reading, who have offered only £800,000. If the Hull transfer goes through later this week, Hunt will be straight into action against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
