HATCHET MAN: Gaydamak considers fire sale but that could prove to be mission impossible at Pompey

Portsmouth owner Sacha Gaydamak is set to become a football club wrecker. If reports are correct, there could be a mass exodus of players in the summer after manager Paul Hart was told to cut the payroll by a quarter. That will be a nice job for him just as his ridiculously short deal until the end of the season is due to end. Portsmouth have 18 players out of contract then and if Sol Campbell, Kanu, Lauren, Hermann Hreidarsson and Sean Davies are all allowed to leave they will struggle to cope. It seems like Gaydamak and his directors are intent on making the club as lean as possible as they continue to try to find a new owner to sell to. But the team should be the main asset and after proving to Hart they have little confidence in him by offering him only a short-term deal, offloading half the squad would be priming him or his successor to fail next season. Maybe they think a new owner will be in place by then, but if one is not Portsmouth will have an even harder time than they have since the start of the calendar year and trying to sell them then for more than a couple of quid would seem like mission impossible.
