Harry Redknapp reveals agony of Hreidarsson after achilles injury

Harry Redknapp admitted Hermann Hreidarsson was in tears when he spoke to him over the weekend after the Portsmouth defender faced up to the possibility his 17-year career could be over.[LNB]Hreidarsson snapped an achilles during his side's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday and was strecthered off, wearing an oxygen mask. He received warm applause from both sets of supporters. [LNB]Tottenham boss Redknapp said: 'I went to see Hermann afterwards and I was sad to see him like that. He was in tears. He was obviously looking forward to another FA Cup semi-final. They said it went off like a bloody gun.'[LNB]Redknapp formed a close relationship with Hreidarsson when the Tottenham boss was in charge at Fratton Park, winning the FA Cup two years ago. It was the highlight of Iceland star Hreidarsson's career in England, where he has had spells with Crystal Palace, Brentford, MK Dons, Ipswich and Charlton since 1997. [LNB]'He's a brilliant man, an unbelievable character,' said Redknapp, before reflecting on 2008. 'For the final, I took them out the Friday night. We all went to an Italian restaurant and Hermann got the karaoke and he's got the best Elvis Presley suit - the white one with the big shoulders. [LNB] Stretchered: Hreidarsson was carried from the field with an oxygen mask attached to his face[LNB]'His voice is diabolical but the actions are fantastic. He lives near me and I can go into a restaurant with my wife and he'll be sitting there with his friends from Iceland, and they do all the Abba songs. [LNB]'When we had the parade after winning the Cup, he started pushing Gaydamark off the top of the open-top bus. I had to say, "he's the owner!"[LNB]'He was a terrific signing. I took him on a free. He played left-back for us but he also played centre half and always has a go. He holds the world record for relegations, though, going down with teams. [LNB]'When I signed him, my (son) Jamie said, "you had a look at his record".
