Gekas desperate to impress
06 Mar 2009 - 12:46:51
On-loan Portsmouth striker Theofanis Gekas is desperate for a chance to impress at Fratton Park, as he awaits his Pompey debut.
The 28-year-old Greece international has yet to feature since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen and is desperate for an opportunity to show his class.
He told The News: "I didn't join the club to be sitting on the terraces.
"I came here to try to help Portsmouth maintain their Premier League status and to find myself after almost six months of inaction with Leverkusen.
"I understand the dismissal of Tony Adams didn't help me. It was a really bad coincidence for me, bad timing.
"Paul Hart doesn't know me well and it's normal turning to players he knows better, but I am trying my best.
"I really want to get the chance to play and do my best on the field."
Gekas' approach has, however, been praised by Pompey coach Guy Whittingham.
He added: "When a player comes over like that as a Greece international he might wonder why he's not playing, but he hasn't been like that at all.
"I expect he has been a little bit frustrated not to get a chance yet, but he hasn't shown it.
"He is bright and lively. He is very approachable and he talks to everybody."
