Gekas must be patient

Portsmouth coach Guy Whittingham has assured Theofanis Gekas that he will get his chance to shine.[LNB] The Greece international joined Pompey in a loan deal from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window, following in the footsteps of his countryman Angelos Basinas.[LNB]However, while Basinas has started every game since his move, Gekas has been left kicking his heels on the sidelines.[LNB]That may be all about to change, though, as Whittingham believes a number of recent eye-catching displays in training will see him drafted into the fold in the not too distant future.[LNB]"Theo hasn't had a chance yet, but I think it's mainly down to the system we're playing," Whittingham told The News.[LNB]"He is very much a goalscorer, who looks to get beyond people. But the system we are playing with one man up front, we need someone up there who can bring other people into the game.[LNB]Goal-hang"He would need to play up front with Peter Crouch or Kanu. Him and David Nugent are the type of players who look to get in behind defences.[LNB]"Nuge will do a lot of running around the pitch, he will chase defenders and work so hard for the team. [LNB]"But Gekas will just look to goal-hang - for want of a better phrase.[LNB]"He will work hard for the side as well, but with a player like that, you want him to expend his energy in the right areas and do what he does best.[LNB]"But between now and the end of the season, I think all of the squad will be involved somewhere along the line."[LNB]
