Gekas exits Pompey

Theofanis Gekas has been axed by Portsmouth as Paul Hart begins his south coast clearout. Gekas left Pompey on Sunday after having his loan spell scrapped two weeks early. He was shown the door by Hart after allegations in the Greek media that the international striker refused to feature against Sunderland. Gekas arrived in January but the 28-year-old's time at the club was littered with controversy. He twice refused to turn out for the reserves, was publicly criticised Hart and played just 60 seconds of first-team football. He has now returned to parent club Bayer Leverkusen. Winger Jermaine Pennant, 26, is expected to be the next Portsmouth player to leave as his short term deal is set to expire at the end of the season. The injury-free winger was left out of the squad for the 3-1 victory over Sunderland at Fratton Park and did not take part in the lap of honour after the game or attend the club's end-of-season awards at HMS Nelson on Tuesday night.
