EXCLUSIVE: Big boys pounce for Swansea pair Gomez and Scotland

Swansea are in danger of paying a hefty price for narrowly missing out on the promotion play-offs, following strong interest in two of their best players, midfielder Jordi Gomez and striker Jason Scotland. A late charge for a top six finish fell just short, and manager Roberto Martinez now faces an uphill struggle to keep his squad intact. Celtic have targeted Gomez and Fulham, Portsmouth and Wigan have all entered the race to sign prolific front runner Scotland. Martinez is likely to find it particularly difficult hanging on to Gomez, who has been a revelation since arriving at the Liberty Stadium on a season-long loan from Espanyol that cost Swansea £200,000 last summer. Gomez, 24 later this month, turned down approaches from three La Liga sides to move to the Championship and wasted no time making his mark as a cultured midfielder with an eye for goal. He scored 14 times in 44 appearances, and while it helped keep Swansea in the hunt for a play-off place, it also alerted Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, who is desperate to take him to Parkhead next season and willing to meet an Espanyol asking price of about £2.5million. Scotland has had another productive campaign, with 21 League goals from 39 starts to maintain an impressive record of a goal every other game since joining Swansea from St Johnstone two years ago. Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is leading the chase to give the £2million-rated Trinidad & Tobago striker a Barclays Premier League platform but is facing competition from Portsmouth and Wigan.
