Cristovao - Sven to take charge

Sporting Lisbon presidential candidate Paulo Pereira Cristovao insists Sven-Goran Eriksson will become the club's new coach if he wins the upcoming elections. Former England boss Eriksson is on the look-out for a new job after his disastrous spell in charge of Mexico came to an end in April. He has been linked with a move to Portsmouth, with prospective new owner Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahi reportedly making the Swede his No.1 choice as manager. Eriksson's agent Athole Still claimed last week that the priority was to secure a return to England, but Cristovao is convinced he has landed his man. Reports in Portugal say Eriksson is waiting to finalise the discussions, with Cristovao confident an agreement will be in place. "I have had a meeting with Eriksson and the subject is nearly finished," Cristovao told the Portuguese media. "If we win the elections, then he will be the coach of Sporting and it will not be a big expense for the club. "Sven is one of the best coaches in the world and could bring success to the club." The presidential elections take place on Friday and Cristovao's rival for the position - Jose Eduardo Bettencourt - plans to keep current Sporting coach Paulo Bento.
