Veteran centre-half Sol Campbell seems certain to be staying at Portsmouth after reported suitors Villarreal revealed they are not looking to bolster their defence.
Campbell, 33, was believed to be high on the Spanish club's summer shopping list after securing Champions League football for next season via a second-placed finish in La Liga.
Pompey were adamant that the former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal defender would not be leaving Fratton Park and Villarreal now appear to have dropped their interest.
Campbell joined the south coast club in August 2006 and earned a recall to the England squad after impressing during his 37 appearances during the recently completed season.
He also captained Harry Redknapp's side to FA Cup Final glory over Cardiff City at Wembley earlier this month.
"Villarreal is not predicting the arrival of another defender," said the Spanish club's sporting director Jose Manuel Llaneza.
"That is clear. Now we do not need more defenders."
