Burnley 1 Portsmouth 2: Optimistic David James eyes greatest ever escape

28 February 2010 22:06
David James must be a masochist. Portsmouth are marooned at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League and all but relegated but their captain insists he is enjoying himself.[LNB]Pompey are set to be deducted nine points tomorrow a penalty they are reportedly going to challenge after spotting a potential loophole in the rules.[LNB]But James is relishing the opportunity to try to pull off the greatest of great escapes.[LNB]French fancy: Portsmouth's Frederic Piquionne opens the scoring[LNB] [LNB] Level pegging: Burnley's Martin Paterson (centre) celebrates with team mate Steven Fletcher[LNB] [LNB] [LNB] Frederic Piquionne's finish and a penalty by Hassan Yebda gave AvramGrant's side their first League win of 2010 and James said: 'All thisis a nice challenge.[LNB]'I want to be part of the most remarkable recovery ever.'[LNB]But Grant said: 'I don't think about staying up. We need to fight for justice.'[LNB]Portsmouth took the lead when Piquionne poked in Danny Webber's cross-shot, but Martin Paterson lobbed in the equaliser.[LNB][LNB] Get in: Hassan Yebda (left) scores the winner from the spot[LNB] [LNB]MATCH FACTSBURNLEY (4-4-2): Jensen 7; Mears 5, Carlisle 3, Cort 5, Fox 6; Elliott 6, McDonald 5 (Eagles 63min, 6), Bikey 5 (Cork 63, 6), Blake 6 (Thompson 80); Paterson 7, Fletcher 7Booked: Carlisle[LNB]PORTSMOUTH (4-1-4-1): James 6; Finnan 6, Rocha 5, Hreidarsson 6, Belhadj 6; Wilson 6; Webber 6 (Diop 90), Yebda 7, O'Hara 6 (Brown 90), Owusu-Abeyie 5 (Utaka 39, 6); Piquionne 7Booked: Rocha, WilsonSent off: Rocha[LNB]Man of the match: Frederic PiquionneReferee: Mark Clattenburg[LNB]The second half was the Clarke Carlisle show but his performance wasthe opposite of his recent successful stint on Countdown, as he gaveaway two penalties. [LNB]Brian Jensen saved the first from Jamie O'Hara but Yebda scored thesecond and Portsmouth hung on despite Ricardo Rocha's late sending-off.[LNB]Jensen said: 'Everybody has seen what happened and he (Carlisle) knows himself and that's it.'[LNB][LNB]Clarke's Countdown to calamity...In recognition of his two winning episodes of Countdown last week, Burnley captain Clarke Carlisle's name is jumbled up on the team sheet so it reads 'Cralek Scilarel'. [LNB]His thinking is also muddled as he lets Piquionne drift in at the back post to put Portsmouth ahead.[LNB] Calamity Carlisle: Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle battles with Portsmouth's Frederic Piquionne (left)[LNB]Carlisle inexplicably fouls Piquionne and concedes a penalty. Luckily for him, Jensen saves O'Hara's spot-kick.[LNB]Carlisle concedes a second penalty when he tries dribbling round two Pompey players before tripping Utaka. Yebda scores the winner from the spot.[LNB]Burnley are pressing in the final minute, but Carlisle lets the ball run out when it clearly came off a Clarets player. Portsmouth have the throw and the last chance is gone. [LNB]As they'd say on Countdown, he had a N-I-G-H-T-M-A-R-E.[LNB] [LNB] [LNB] [LNB] Burnley 1 Portsmouth 2: Avram Grant laments points penalty as Pompey win Portsmouth paupers' crackpot plan for survival after going into administrationAdministrators take control of Portsmouth and vow to fans: 'We will save your club' PORTSMOUTH FC
