Boss hails battling Blues

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish was delighted to see his side dig out their first win of the season at home to Portsmouth. McLeish had stressed the need to make St Andrews a fortress this term after too many draws had cost the club their Premier League spot two years ago. And although he had to wait until the closing stages, the Scot got his wish as David James brought down Sebastian Larsson and James McFadden converted from the penalty spot. McLeish said: "It's very important to get that first win on the board. We started the game with completely different tactics to the Manchester United game. "We worked hard at getting it right. We played some good football. We got a bit tired in the second half but came strong again with the substitutes."
