Barry: Crouch can rise to occasion

Gareth Barry has backed Peter Crouch to spearhead England's attempt to maintain their 100% record in World Cup qualifying Group Six.Fabio Capello's team - who warmed up for the match at Wembley with a 4-0 friendly thrashing of Slovakia at the weekend - face the pool's only other remaining unbeaten side, Ukraine.A home victory would put England on a perfect 15 points from five matches - eight ahead of the former Soviet state, albeit having played a game more. Capello was left with much to ponder after Saturday's friendly, which saw a trio of strikers - Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole and Crouch - limp off injured before the final whistle.A hamstring problem has since ruled out Heskey, who has become a crucial part of the Italian's first-choice squad since he took over after England's failure to make Euro 2008. Cole is also out of the equation, so it seems certain that Portsmouth striker Crouch will be asked to assume the target man's role after recovering from his weekend knock. His former Aston Villa team-mate Barry, who will also play in his customary holding position in midfield, has full confidence in the lanky frontman.Barry said: "There aren't too many about who can play that role as Emile does. He's been a big part of teams wherever he's been, and players like playing with them. In terms of that, he is unique and can play a big part for your team. He can do a great job. But Peter can fill that role just as well. In terms of replacing Emile on Wednesday, Peter is up to doing that job to a high standard as well."[LNB]
