Barnet Winger Wants Pompey Move
But is he any good?
Barnet winger Ricky Holmes has told the local media that he wants to sign for Portsmouth despite offer from other clubs in League Two and League One.
The 25-year-old hopes he will know who he will be signing for at the end of the week, although Guy Whittingham doesn't return from holiday until next Monday. Having said that, there have been previous talks between both parties and a move seems ominous.
Holmes, if he signs, is likely to play on the wing or as a support striker and could be described as a player in the "Wes Thomas" mould. Someone who will work extremely hard and put goals on a plate for another striker, just as he did for Izale McLeod when the pair were at Barnet during the 2011/2012 season.
A few Bees fans I have spoken to claim that their club wouldn't have been relegated had Holmes not suffered a foot injury in February that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Ironically, the same foot injury sustained in January 2011 ruled him out for the remainder of the previous season too.
So whilst there may be concerns about his foot and the tendancy to go missing in games (like many wingers, in fairness) Holmes would seem to be a good addition to the squad. His goalscoring ratio for Barnet was around one in every six games, which isn't too bad for a winger.
We should know by Friday whether Ricky will sign on the dotted line, though it may not be confirmed until next week when Guy returns from holiday. Watch this space.
