Adams relieved after victory
01 Dec 2008 - 08:03:50
Portsmouth manager Tony Adams accepted that his side had been fortunate to secure a 3-2 victory at home to struggling Blackburn Rovers.
Pompey were 2-0 ahead at Fratton Park thanks to goals from Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe, before the visitors stormed back to draw level by the midway point of the second half.
However, Sean Davis grabbed a winner 11 minutes from time to ensure Pompey avoided a repeat of their midweek 2-2 UEFA Cup draw against AC Milan.
Adams said: "We're going through a little phase of surrendering things. This time we knocked off from a throw-in.
"But at least we had the spirit to come back and win it and on this occasion, a bit more time. I'm delighted with them again. It's a relief to get the win.
"We were not very good in the first half. You can hear from my voice that I had to get into the guys a bit at half-time.
"But for 15-20 minutes at the start of the second half I thought it was back to the way we played against Milan.
"Crouch and Defoe got really good goals, but after you have gone 2-0 up it can be a big test when suddenly you let one in.
"David James has gone mad about letting it slip but we've come back and won it and done the right things in the end.
"I sent Sean Davis on because I needed fresh legs, but it's a big credit to big Papa Bouba Diop who I thought was running out of steam, that he could still make that kind of run that led to the winning goal."
