Adams defends Pompey stint

Tony Adams has admitted he was surprised to be sacked by Portsmouth just 22 games into the job at Fratton Park.[LNB] The former England captain was only appointed as Harry Redknapp's successor on a two-and-a-half-year contract in October.[LNB]Adams lost the likes of Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe in January and he believes he had neither the time nor the backing to be a success at the club.[LNB]Despite his short and unsuccessful tenure at Fratton Park, the 42-year-old insists the experience has not put him off taking another job in football management.[LNB]Surprised"I am a little bit surprised, but results haven't been good," admitted Adams.[LNB]"I haven't had a lot of time and I certainly haven't had the financial backing. We've had a few injuries as well and that's tough to take.[LNB]"It's not turned me off management that's for sure.[LNB]"I've just got to make sure I get all the parameters right before I walk into the next one.[LNB]"I can't wait to get back in and have another bash. But I won't be impulsive,[LNB]I've got to learn from that and make sure I get things right."[LNB]SadIn-form Pompey striker David Nugent, who had been given a fresh lease of life under Adams, is sad to see the former Arsenal defender leave the club.[LNB]"It was a bit of a shock getting up this morning and seeing the news," he told Sky Sports News.[LNB]"He's been in today wishing us all the best of luck for the rest of the season. Whoever comes in now has got a bit of a job on their hands. We'll see who comes in next.[LNB]"He called me aside saying 'You've done well in the past few games, keep it going and hopefully I'll work with you again in the future'. That was about it really.[LNB]"I was [surprised at Adams' exit]. He's given me a chance to play. I was happy for him to stay. I would have thought he would have been given a few more games, but it's the chairman's decision."[LNB]When asked if he thought Portsmouth were in a relegation battle, Nugent replied: "Yeah, definitely, there are a few teams in there.[LNB]"There are about 11 teams that could go down at the moment. We've got to get a bit of stability at the club, win a few games and get out of there."[LNB]
