Port Vale's teenage striker Steve Thompson is expected to miss the first two months of the season with a hamstring injury.
The 19-year-old picked up the problem in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Walsall.
Vale boss Lee Sinnott confirmed to the Sentinel: "Steve's got an injury which means he's going to be away from training for about six weeks.
"That's frustrating for the lad himself and it's obviously frustrating for ourselves and the supporters.
"He had a hamstring pull very early on in pre-season, but this is a different injury and isn't connected with the previous one. But we'll deal with it and go on from here."
