Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott is keen to bring Derby County defender Mitchell Hanson to the club on a permanent basis in the summer, after snapping up the 19-year-old on loan until the end of the season.
Hanson is currently sidelined with a calf injury, but the Vale boss made his move for the teenager with a view to the club's long-term future.
Sinnott told Vale's official website: "He can play at centre-back or at full-back, but he won't be able to join us for ten days because of his injury.
"But if I'd waited until he's over the injury, we wouldn't be able to look at him until the summer, so it makes sense to get him in now rather than later.
"He'd only be playing in Derby's reserves, so we may as well take a look at him playing for our own reserve side, or perhaps in the first team, and then look at the situation at the end of the season."
