Gannon keen to strengthen

Port Vale manager Jim Gannon vowed to work even harder next week in his attempts to strengthen his squad after labelling their recent dip in form "alarming".Vale were top of League Two and flying on the back of a 12-match unbeaten run going into mid-December but - following their 2-1 derby defeat at Crewe - have now lost five of their last six, combined with the loss of Micky Adams, and have fallen nine points adrift of new leaders Chesterfield.Gannon is the new man in charge tasked with guiding the Burslem outfit into League One and he knows urgent action must be taken sooner rather than later to get their promotion charge back on track. He said: "The decline in this team from one that was doing well before Christmas to the last six games has been alarming. Before I came in this team had lost three games in a row, struggled to finish off Burton, then lost to Burnley and has now lost to Crewe."I worked last week to get some new faces in and I will work even harder this week. We need to go back to basics, get some fresh faces and better players in. But I only want to spend the money if they are going to improve the quality of the team."He added: "We were missing some star players but both goals we conceded were poor and we concede possession far too easily."
