Adams hails Vale effort

Mickey Adams paid tribute to his Port Vale players' work ethic after they claimed an entertaining 2-1 derby win over Crewe. Louis Dodds headed home Doug Loft's cross to give Vale a 13th-minute lead and Marc Richards doubled the advantage with a 74th-minute penalty following Patrick Ada's foul on Gary Roberts. Clayton Donaldson pulled a goal back for Crewe with a spot-kick of his own after Vale's Anthony Griffith handled and received a second yellow card for his trouble. "The boys were magnificent," said Adams. "If anyone has seen a group of players work as hard as that in Vale shirts before I would like to hear from them. "There was a lot of pride at stake and every single one of our players was bang up for it. "If you believe everything you hear coming out of Crewe you would think we were playing the Arsenal of League Two. But we played some very good football ourselves and were particularly dominant in the opening 35 minutes. Crewe are a good side, but the shape of our team caused them problems and it took them a while to get to grips with it."
