Vale scout plots promotion despite cancer battle
Port Vale's long serving chief scout, Ray Williams, is determined to help his club win promotion from League Two despite his battle with prostate cancer.
The 63-year-old, who was diagnosed last November, was forced to relinquish his role while undergoing therapy but already has his eye on returning to the job he loves.
He told the Stoke Sentinel: "I finish the radiotherapy in late August and hope to be back scouting in September.
"The club is on the up. I like the look of the squad and we have the right manager in Micky Adams.
"We have a good chance of getting promoted and I want to be part of that."
Williams, a former player at Vale, scored 40 goals in 194 appearances for the club between 1972 and 1977. He was named chief scout in 1980 and has been in the role ever since.
